Soviet Field Telephone TAI-43 (ТАИ-43)

A highly optimized, historically accurate 3D model of the legendary Soviet TAI-43 military field telephone. Created using CAD design principles, the model features high-quality hard-surface topology and is fully ready for use in modern game engines (Unity, Unreal Engine) and social VR platforms (e.g., VRChat). Key features: realistic composite casing texture (Bakelite/Carbolite), authentic metal latches, a carrying strap, and meticulously recreated internal plates displaying technical data and schematics - with text that remains fully legible despite showing signs of age.
Technical specifications:
• Polygon count: 6,940 triangles (triangulated mesh optimized for high performance). • UV layout: single UV atlas with a dense, custom-tuned arrangement (81.2% packing density using UVPackmaster). Curved UV islands have been straightened using the "Follow Active Quads" function to eliminate aliasing artifacts. • Texturing: high-quality PBR textures baked from a high-poly model featuring clean bevels. • Resolution: 2K texture maps (2048x2048). • Engine compatibility: includes a ready-to-use MaskMap for Unity URP (Metallic/AO/Detail/Smoothness channels); features a 12-pixel padding to prevent texture edge artifacts during mip-mapping.
Package contents:
• Source .blend file (with an organized collection hierarchy). • Ready-to-use .FBX and .OBJ formats. • Full set of PBR textures.
Major Update v1.1: The Soviet TAI-43 field telephone has come to life in Unity and VRChat!
Hello! I’ve given my model of the Soviet TAI-43 field telephone a major overhaul. It’s no longer just a static 3D model; it’s now a fully interactive object, ready for use in your Unity projects or VRChat worlds. I’ve put a lot of work into optimization, so you don’t have to worry about performance.
What’s new in version v1.1?
Easy one-click import: Includes a ready-to-use .unitypackage file. No need to fuss with settings - just drag and drop it into your project, and everything works right away. • Two ready-made prefabs: I’ve provided two separate configurations - a standard one for Unity and a version specifically tailored for VRChat (via the VRChat Creator Companion). • Great visuals without the lag: The materials are set up using the popular Poiyomi Toon Shader (v10.0.27). Thanks to packed maps (Metallic/Smoothness) and Parallax Heightmapping, the phone looks incredibly detailed while remaining lightweight on your system. • Optimized geometry: I’ve trimmed the excess - the model now consists of 6,791 triangles (down from 6,940), while preserving its authentic historical silhouette and all the intricate mechanical details. • Full rig: I’ve added an armature with 12 bones, making it easy for you to set up basic animations and animate the telephone cord.
How does it work in VRChat?
Especially for VRC CC, I’ve implemented some interactive features - fun ones, in my opinion - using Udon scripts: • Realistic Lid: The latch and the top cover can be opened and closed by hand, complete with spatial 3D audio. • A Handset with Personality: You can pick it up, and if you pull the cord too far, it will snap off with a crackle and sparks! If you simply drop the handset, it will automatically and neatly return to its base after a short delay. The timing and sound effects can easily be tweaked in the code to suit your preferences. • Generator Crank: The inductor handle can be rotated. I’ve configured it with physical inertia, a satisfying resistance when turning, and the characteristic clicking/crackling sound of a mechanical generator. All sounds are already embedded in the prefab, so there’s no need for any separate setup.
