Famous since the Heian period as “Michinoku paper,” it reached its peak of prosperity during the era of Date Masamune. This durable yet warm washi, born from torafu kozo and pure stream water, has been used in rituals at Todai-ji Temple in Nara and even in historic documents such as the Japanese Instrument of Surrender. Today, commercial production in workshops has ceased. The only remaining paper is produced entirely from the kozo fields by the local group “Kurahuto,” making it an extremely rare presence nationwide. Shiroishi Washi symbolizes the nature, history, and culture of the region. Shiroishi Washi shikishi boards are created using the mounting techniques of Itajiku.com. By backing the paper in the same way as familiar washi craft items, they take on a solid form that can be properly appreciated and collected. You can feel the delicate beauty as well as the rugged strength of the washi right in your hands. Artists are also welcome to use them as drawing paper for their works. These become special pieces that carry the character, nature, culture, and history of Shiroishi. We hope you will visit Shiroishi and experience for yourself the charm of the region that dwells within the paper. A sheet of Shiroishi Washi shikishi is a connection between the region and you.
