Although both abhorred the Spaniards, they sometimes simply could not agree with every issue, especially naval dominance in the seven seas. The fortune did not favour the older empire, however. The Dutch swept in and took control of the Dutch East Indies, spice trade and European trade. Independent, proud and bold Dutch were able to penetrate many territories conceived to be under the Portuguese rule. With a mighty navy and dominant trading ships, the Dutch could enjoy their Zenith period called "de Gouden Eeuw" or the Golden Age. But is was not all bad stories for the Portuguese. Portugal was able to keep strongholds in Brazil, African colonies and Macao. And Portuguese influence in its old colonies is still visible to this day. Catholic Portuguese and Protestant Dutch way of approaching the local population was quite different too. While both the indigenous and Portuguese assimilated with each other, the Dutch only kept interaction to the minimum level most of the time. This meant that the Dutch language could not ever become dominant in Dutch indies and elsewhere, but it was a nice way of having a good relationship with the Tokugawa Shogunate, whose only interest was social "harmony" - no political objection to its stagnation-triggering minds whatsoever.
