Tachineputa Festival – A Towering Summer Tradition in Goshogawara The Tachineputa Festival, held every year from August 4 to 8 in Goshogawara City, Aomori Prefecture, is one of northern Japan’s most spectacular summer events. The highlight of the festival is the giant illuminated floats, called Tachineputa. Each float stands up to 23 meters tall (as high as a seven-story building) and weighs nearly 19 tons. Decorated with heroic figures from Japanese history and mythology, these massive lantern floats are paraded through the streets, accompanied by powerful drumbeats, flutes, and energetic chants. The festival has its origins in the Edo period but once disappeared in the early 20th century due to the spread of electric wires. Thanks to local efforts, it was revived in the 1990s and has since become a symbol of Goshogawara’s cultural pride.
