FORGOTTEN JAPAN | THE SHUTTERED SHOPPING STREET Once, this local shopping street was filled with voices, shop lights, and the rhythm of everyday life. Greengrocers, fish shops, clothing stores, and other small family-run businesses lined the street. Goods were displayed outside the storefronts, bicycles passed by, and colorful triangular flags fluttered overhead. In Japan, streets like these are often called shōtengai — traditional neighborhood shopping streets where small local shops gather together. Years passed. Now, the shutters are closed. The once-colorful flags have faded, and small weeds quietly grow through cracks in the pavement. This A5 ring notebook depicts two moments in the life of the same shopping street. The front cover shows the forgotten present. The back cover shows the same street in its past, when the shops were open and the shōtengai was still part of everyday community life. The buildings, streetlights, and layout connect the two covers, allowing you to see how the same place has changed through time. This is more than an image of an old Japanese street.
