【作品解説 / Description of the work】
Pencil Drawing “Operation Kikusui 2605 -Battleship Yamato & Zero Fighter Type 52 Koh-” This work is based on the theme of "Operation Kikusui", which was planned and executed for the defense of Okinawa. Operation Kikusui was a large-scale suicide mission conducted by the Imperial Navy in response to the Allied invasion of Okinawa. It was carried out by the First Mobile Land-based Air Fleet (Third Air Fleet, Fifth Air Fleet, and Tenth Air Fleet) from Operation Kikusui I on April 6 to Operation Kikusui X on June 22, 1945. In response, the Navy's First Air Fleet, the Army's Sixth Air Force, and in the earliest stages, the Eighth Air Division, also carried out all-out attacks. In the series of operations, 940 Navy and 887 Army planes carried out suicide attacks. 2,045 Navy pilots and 1,022 Army pilots died in the suicide attacks. The work depicts the Yamato and the bombed-out Zero fighters heading straight toward the setting sun on the ocean in the approaching evening darkness. I drew this picture to pray for the repose of the souls of the many heroes of the Imperial Japanese Navy, which was about to enter its final days, and who were scattered in suicide missions that did not allow them to return alive. The crew on board the Yamato are all waving their caps with all their might. They are not only waving their caps to their comrades who are leaving for Okinawa, their loved ones who remain in their homeland, and their beloved hometown, but also to you, the person in front of this drawing, who is living in the future that they wanted to live in, expressing their strong wish, "Don't forget us".
