鉛筆画「双対の巨竜《承》阿形 -航空母艦 加賀-」(月刊『丸』2025年7月号表紙作品) Pencil Drawing “The Twin Reviathan -A-Gyo- Sho Aircraft Carrier Kaga” 本作品「双対の巨竜《承》」は、平成26年に描いた同名の「双対の巨竜」を、令和7年現在の最新の考証に基づいて描き直したものです。ミッドウェイ島沖の海底に沈む加賀の調査や、最近発見された加賀の写真（艦首の6本支柱や飛行甲板下に新設されたデッキが確認できる）などの新たな情報を反映し、一から制作し直しました。 「双対の巨竜」のコンセプトは、大日本帝国海軍の大型主力空母「赤城」と「加賀」を、さまざまな点で対となるように描くことにあります。 赤城と加賀は、航空母艦の運用が次第に重要視される中で、帝国海軍の空母戦力を大きく強化した艦船です。大東亜戦争の序盤では、第一航空戦隊を構成する両艦がまさに無敵の存在として、対となり作戦を遂行しました。しかし、ミッドウェイ海戦では、まず加賀が被弾し、その後、まるでパートナーを失った比翼の鳥のように、赤城も戦闘不能に陥りました。 本作品は、「双対の巨竜」と題し、赤城と加賀を一対の竜として描いています。加賀は幅広く角ばった艦体形状から「雄形」とし、波を乗り越えて艦底を露わにした構図を「阿形」と見立てました。一方、赤城は丸みを帯びた細長い艦体形状から「雌形」とし、波に艦首を突っ込んだ構図を「吽形」としています。神社の狛犬のように、右に「阿形（加賀）」、左に「吽形（赤城）」を配置することで、両艦を同時に眺めると、鳥が翼を広げたようなシルエットが浮かび上がります。 This work, “The Twin Reviathan -A-Gyo- Sho Aircraft Carrier Kaga,” is a re-drawing of “The Twin Reviathan -A-Gyo- Aircraft Carrier Kaga” of the same title drawn in 2014, based on the latest research as of 2025. It was redrawn based on the latest research as of 2025. The new work was created from scratch, reflecting new information from research into the Kaga's sinking to the bottom of the ocean off Midway Island and recently discovered photographs of the Kaga (which show the six-struts bow and the newly constructed deck below the flight deck). The concept of ”The Twin Reviathan” is to portray the Akagi and Kaga, the Imperial Japanese Navy’s large mainstay aircraft carriers, as a complementary pair in multiple aspects. Akagi and Kaga significantly bolstered the Imperial Navy’s carrier warfare capabilities as aircraft carrier operations grew increasingly vital. In the early stages of the Greater East Asia War, these two ships, forming the 1st Air Fleet, operated as an invincible duo, executing missions in tandem. However, during the Battle of Midway, Kaga was struck first, and soon after, like a bird of prey bereft of its mate, Akagi was also rendered inoperable. Titled ”The Twin Reviathan”, this work depicts Akagi and Kaga as a pair of dragons. Kaga, with its broad, angular hull, is portrayed as a “male dragon” and composed in an “A-gyo” form, its exposed keel rising above the waves. Conversely, Akagi’s rounded, elongated hull evokes a “female dragon,” and its composition, plunging bow-first into the waves, represents an “Un-gyo” form. Mirroring the guardian lion-dogs at a shrine, the “A-gyo” (Kaga) is positioned on the right, and the “Un-gyo” (Akagi) on the left. When viewed together, their silhouettes evoke a bird spreading its wings.
