つちもちしんじ --- # Sanshiro Pond in Spring ## Print Details 255 × 255 mm Echizen kizuki hōsho paper Water-based multicolor woodblock print / Hand-printed Artist: Shinji Tsuchimochi Printing & Blockmaking: Takashi Kashiwagi ## Artist’s Note With *Tokyo Through the Four Seasons*, I wanted to explore the distinctive atmosphere of each season—a quality that ukiyo-e and shin-hanga have long captured so beautifully—and rediscover it in present-day Tokyo. For the first work in the series, “Spring,” I depicted the departure of the migratory miyakodori. Reflecting something of the atmosphere of our own time, I wanted to express a sense of hope through the birds as they take flight lightly and freely, even as rain and mist obscure the path ahead. The setting is Sanshiro Pond, formally known as Ikutokuen Shinji-ike. The pond came to be widely known by this name through Natsume Soseki’s novel *Sanshiro*. Although located in the heart of Tokyo, it retains a remarkable sense of quiet and traces of the landscape inherited from the Edo period. Perhaps it can be seen as one of those landscapes that evokes a deeply familiar image of Japan. Shinji Tsuchimochi
