Japanese has a wonderfully confusing collection of ways to refer to yourself—and that is exactly what inspired this digital paper set. This collection mixes familiar first-person expressions such as 私 (watashi), 僕 (boku), and 俺 (ore) with old-fashioned expressions, regional forms, words associated with particular eras or social roles, playful expressions, and even ways of saying “I” that you might encounter online or hear used jokingly among friends. So if you look at one of these patterns and think, “Do Japanese people actually say ALL of these?” The answer is: Not every day. Definitely not. And that’s part of the fun.
