FORGOTTEN JAPAN | THE INHERITED ROOM Once, this was an ordinary room where a grandmother lived with her family. Tatami mats, traditional Japanese walls, an old tea cabinet, and a tear-off calendar hanging from a wooden pillar. A pendulum clock marked the passing hours, while a cup of tea and a newspaper rested on the low table. Yarn and small handmade dolls were part of everyday life. Years passed, and the grandmother was gone. But the room remained. Eventually, the same room was inherited by her granddaughter. The tatami and old furniture disappeared, and the space became a bright, modern room. A wedding dress now waits there for the granddaughter's future. Yet one small thing remains from the grandmother's time — a handmade doll that once belonged in the old room. This A5 ring notebook depicts two moments in the life of the same room. The front cover shows the room in the present day, transformed for a new generation. The back cover shows the same room in the past, when it was still part of the grandmother's everyday life. The people themselves are never shown. Instead, furniture, everyday objects, clocks, and changing light quietly tell the story of two generations. Rooms change. People move on. But sometimes, a small piece of the past remains. FORGOTTEN JAPAN is a series inspired by disappearing Japanese landscapes, everyday life, and the memories that remain in the places people once called home.
