【Work Overview】 This work depicts the battleship Yamato leading a fleet of ten vessels—the light cruisers Yahagi, Fuyutsuki, Suzutsuki, Isokaze, Yukikaze, Hamakaze, Asashimo, Hatsushimo, and Kasumi—plowing through churning seas. Historically, when sailing at this speed, they formed the “Third Alert Navigation Formation” (a circular formation surrounding the Yamato). However, this work deliberately avoids rigid formation constraints, focusing instead on capturing all ships comprising the Second Fleet's First Raiding Force within a single painting. 【Operation Ten-Go 1 and Yamato's Final Moments】 On March 26, 1945, the Combined Fleet launched Operation Ten-Go. Following the U.S. landing on Okinawa Island on April 1st of that year, the Second Fleet, commanded by Vice Admiral Ito Seiichi, launched a daring assault on Okinawa in response to the airborne special attacks. Their mission was brutal: destroy enemy transport convoys, then beach themselves on the island to become gun emplacements and continue fighting. The fleet departed Tokuyama on April 6th. Early the next morning, April 7th, radar detected a large approaching U.S. formation. After three hours of intense wave after wave of attacks, the Yamato, struck by 10 torpedoes and 5 bombs (sources vary), rolled onto its port side and sank in a massive explosion. The sinking site lies 176 km south of Onna Island in the Danjo Islands, at a depth of 345 meters. There, she still rests quietly alongside many of her crew. 【The Trajectory of the Lucky Ship, Yukikaze】 Now, the numbers in the title, “26311208,” hint at the presence of a “hidden protagonist” in this work. That is the destroyer Yukikaze. Launched as the eighth ship of the Kagero-class destroyers, Yukikaze was the sole survivor of its class of 19 ships, earning it the title of the “Miracle Destroyer.” It participated in over 16 major operations without ever suffering major damage, consistently achieving combat successes, which led to it being hailed as the “Lucky Ship.” At the same time, she was also the witness ship that saw the final moments of all the great battleships: the Yamato, the Musashi, and the Shinano. After the war, she served as a demobilization transport ship, bringing over 13,000 people back to Japan. She was later transferred to the Republic of China (Taiwan) as a reparations ship. Renamed the Danyang, she served as a flagship but was sadly scrapped after suffering damage from a typhoon in 1969. 【The Meaning Behind the Title “26311208”】 Following a repatriation campaign by former crew members, the steering wheel and anchor of the Yukikaze were finally returned to Japan on December 8, 1971 (Showa 46). December 8, 2631 of the Imperial Era (1971) – The numbers in the title mark this memorable day when she finally completed her duty and returned home. The fleet depicted in this work is, in a sense, the “soul of the ships.” It portrays the scene where the soul of the Yukikaze, the last to return to Japan, reunites with her former comrades-in-arms and heads for Okinawa to complete the mission they were unable to fulfill... Coincidentally, the year following the return of Yukikaze's remains, Okinawa ended its long period of occupation and was returned to Japan. Incidentally, ships depicted with their bows pointing downward represent those lost in battle, while those with bows pointing upward represent ships that returned. 【作品概要】本作品では、戦艦「大和」を中心に、軽巡「矢矧」、駆逐艦「冬月」「涼月」「磯風」「雪風」「浜風」「朝霜」「初霜」「霞」の全10隻が、うねる海を突き進む姿を描いています。 史実では、この速力で航行する際は「第三警戒航行序列（大和を囲む輪形陣）」を形成していましたが、本作ではあえて陣形に縛られず、第二艦隊第一遊撃部隊を構成したすべての艦を一枚の絵に収めることに注力しました。 【天一号作戦と大和の最期】 昭和20（1945）年3月26日、連合艦隊は「天一号作戦」を発動。同年4月1日の米軍沖縄本島上陸を受け、伊藤整一中将率いる第二艦隊は、航空特攻に呼応して沖縄への突入を敢行します。その任務は、敵輸送船団を撃滅し、そのまま現地で座礁・砲台化して戦闘を継続するという過酷なものでした。 4月6日に徳山沖を出撃した艦隊は、翌7日午前、接近する米軍の大編隊を電探で探知。それより3時間にわたる激しい波状攻撃の末、魚雷10本、爆弾5発（諸説あり）を受けた「大和」は左舷へ横転し、大爆発と共に没しました。沈没地点は男女群島女島の南方176km、水深345mの海底。今もなお、多くの将兵と共に静かに眠っています。 【幸運艦・雪風の軌跡】 さて、タイトルの数字「26311208」は、本作における「隠れた主役」の存在を示唆しています。それは駆逐艦「雪風」です。 陽炎型8番艦として誕生した「雪風」は、同型艦19隻の中で唯一終戦まで生き残った「奇跡の駆逐艦」です。主要な作戦に16回以上参加しながら、一度も大きな損傷を受けず、常に戦果を上げ続けたことから「幸運艦」と称えられました。その一方で、「大和」「武蔵」「信濃」といった巨艦の最期をすべて見届けてきた、看取りの艦でもありました。 戦後は復員輸送艦として1万3千人以上を日本へ送り届け、その後は賠償艦として中華民国（台湾）へ譲渡。「丹陽」と名を変え旗艦として活躍しましたが、昭和44（1969）年の台風被害により惜しまれつつ解体されました。 【タイトル「26311208」に込めた意味】 かつての乗組員らによる返還運動を経て、昭和46（1971）年12月8日、「雪風」の舵輪と錨がようやく日本に返還されました。皇紀2631（1971）年12月8日――タイトルの数字は、彼女がようやく役目を終えて帰国した、この記念すべき日を指しています。 本作に描かれた艦隊は、いわば「艦の魂」です。最後に日本へ帰還した「雪風」の魂が、かつての戦友たちと合流し、果たせなかった任務を完遂すべく沖縄へ向かう…そんな情景を描きました。 奇しくも「雪風」の遺品が返還された翌年、沖縄は長い占領統治を終え、日本へと返還されることになるのです。 ちなみに、艦首が下を向いている艦は戦没艦、艦首が上を向いているのは帰還した艦として描き分けもしています。
